KENDRA MORRIS RELEASES FIRST SINGLE AND VIDEO “CONCRETE WAVES” ON WAX POETICS RECORDS
FORTHCOMING FULL LENGTH DEBUT SLATED FOR RELEASE SPRING OF 2012
Wax Poetics is pleased to announce the first single, “Concrete Waves,” from NYC-based artist Kendra Morris along with the world-premiere music video—a daring, dark tale of obsessive love gone bad.
“Concrete Waves,” an undeniably seductive song and the first single from Kendra’s forthcoming LP (to be released on Wax Poetics Records in the spring of 2012), takes its cues from gritty ’70s and ’80s R&B and soul channeled through some dastardly lyrical content—Kendra’s voice, at once, striking and languid, and sometimes conjuring Sade tinged with the heartfelt emotion of early Etta James, colored with co-writer Jeremy Page’s adept guitar stylings, drive the point straight home.
Of the single, Kendra says: “ ‘Concrete Waves’ is about going after something that is so wrong, but it feels so good, and you go ahead and do it anyways. You ride that wave and the high it gives you is incredible, but eventually you hit a crack in the pavement and are bound to spill.”
The song’s companion video — directed by Nicholas Sasso — brings the viewer into a twisted first person account of obsessive love. Sasso says: “I am extremely excited to unveil this video, as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a music video quite like it. When I heard ‘Concrete Waves’ seven months ago while hanging with the Wax Poetics guys, the video concept came to me right away (how or why I don’t know). Most music videos I see bore me. Information is processed at such a high speed these days that entertainment should be designed (when applicable) to keep up. I wanted to create a video that engaged the audience in a new way. I wanted to hold their interest for an entire song so that they wouldn’t have the inclination to ‘look’ or ‘click’ elsewhere. Kendra’s heartfelt performance and Jeremy’s wide-ranging musical composition were the perfect vehicle to help me to tell a story with each and every frame. I think we did what we set out to accomplish, and I am very proud of everyone’s efforts.”

Wax Poetics co-chief, Andre Torres, says: “Our little secret for the past year — we’re excited to finally present our newest signee Kendra Morris to the rest of the world. After meeting Kendra and discussing her plans for the future, we knew we wanted to be a part of it. Watching her develop as an artist over these past months has been one of the highlights of our past decade at Wax Poetics. With the new Serato single and epic video for ‘Concrete Waves,’ we set the stage for a new powerhouse on the music scene.”
Today also marks the label’s release of the “Concrete Waves” single as an official Serato Control Vinyl 12-inch featuring the album track on Side A and a remix of the song by hip-hop legend DJ Premier on Side B. The technology introduces Scratch Live software, allowing DJs to mix and scratch files from their computer using regular turntables or CDJs. Control Vinyl in various colors soon became collector’s items among DJs.
