Night Beds

It’s difficult to say where Night Beds began, but Winston Yellen recalls being invited to his longtime friend Matt Wilcox’s apartment in August of 2006 to aimlessly record.

lowry

updated: 22 September 2011

Desolation, love, war, loss and extraterrestrials – somehow these disparate topics make a cohesive whole (not to mention a stellar album) on Lowry’s third record, Emporia.

helmet

updated: 21 September 2011

Seeing Eye Dog, Helmet’s seventh album, is one of the band’s most uncompromising and ambitious releases, embodying the classic and utterly unique Helmet sound and pushing it into regions the band has never before explored.

chamberlin

updated: 15 September 2011

Chamberlin is the biggest band from Vermont that no one there has ever really heard of. As their debut album Bitter Blood (Roll Call/EMI) drops, the eight-month-old act finds themselves criss-crossing the country in the midst of national tours, having played but a handful of shows in their home state.

BEN LEE – DEEPER INTO DREAM

updated: 16 August 2011

There’s a quote out there that says, “Dreams are only thoughts you didn’t have time to think about during the day.” Aussie-born singer/songwriter Ben Lee reaches beyond such a notion and turns it upside down in order to grab a hold of the unconscious. And on Deeper Into Dream, his Dangerbird Records debut, he examines the intricate layers of dreams, looking to make sense out of life’s most complex questions and ideals.

fDeluxe

updated: 21 July 2011

The band’s origin is nothing short of a who’s who dancing around Paisley Park in concentric circles…

cat martino

minus the bear

updated: 8 July 2011

Minus the Bear have always avoided easy classification, preferring to tread their own inimitable path defined by energy and invention. “OMNI,” the Seattle-based band’s fourth full-length recording and debut Dangerbird Records release, sees a stunning evolution to their sound and vision.

the living kills

updated: 22 June 2011

For 10 years, Merrill Sherman recorded his songs alone on a four-track in an Alabama shack and later a Chicago basement. It wasn’t until he moved to New York City that he met the members who would become The Living Kills: organ/moog/vocalist Jennifer Bassett, bass player/vocalist Brenden Beu (previously of The Fearsome Sparrow), and drummer Yancy Sabenicio.

the soundtrack of our lives

updated: 16 June 2011

The band, formed in 1995 out of the ruins of notable underground heroes Union Carbide Productions, soon forged a nearly two decade history as highly championed, critically acclaimed, much ballyhooed, psychedelic indie rock faves, commanding the attention and accolades of not only the hard-to-please music press, but also making compadres of the likes of Chemical Brothers, The Charlatans, Oasis, (and other notable contemporaries).

the limousines

updated: 16 June 2011

“The kids are disco dancing, they’re tired of rock ’n’ roll.”

So sings The Limousines frontman Eric Victorino with tongue firmly in cheek during “Internet Killed The Video Star,” one of many deliriously catchy electro-pop songs on the group’s debut album, Get Sharp.

joe purdy

updated: 16 June 2011

Celebrated singer/songwriter, Joe Purdy is more aptly described as a troubadour—the term, as archaic as it may seem, refers moreover to the idea of a communicator of folklore through song— one who travels and tells stories using the effective medium of music.

hanggai

updated: 16 June 2011

While the seven members who comprise Hanggai currently call Beijing, China, their homebase, the highly textured and abundantly fluent repertoire of this combo is richly steeped in their Mongolian roots. For this group, there lies a real artistic calling to preserve the music of their Mongolian culture and background, The music making, for Hanggai, is thus more than just playing. It’s a mission.

grace weber

updated: 16 June 2011

Over the past few years, the Milwaukee native, who now lives in Brooklyn, has sung on the famed “Showtime at the Apollo” in Harlem, at the Kennedy Center, the Ella Awards, and on the Today Show. Last year, Grace graced the Oprah Winfrey Show, handpicked by Oprah herself from hundreds of thousands of entrants in a national video contest (the contents of which featured Grace busking in an NYC subway), and performed on the program.

found audio

updated: 16 June 2011

The band finds the potential of music and songs to be limitless, and are constantly striving to combine impossible reach with actual sound. Influences are all over the place: from The Meat Puppets to Nick Drake, from Fiona Apple to the Pixies, from Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band to Radiohead, to countless others of clashing genres and colliding aesthetics.

The band is more conceptual than actual, although there are seven members who ultimately translate the studio work on stage. Kicksville calls itself a collective and claims over 60 ‘citizens’ from around the world who contribute to the whole in significant ways, which might partially explain Kicksville’s wild diversity.

Naomi Greenwald

updated: 1 December 2010

Naomi Greenwald is a smart ass. It’s not an insult to the artist. Not at all, but when you finally connect with her in-person, you just know you’re in the presence of a mind that races at breakneck speed, twice as fast as anybody you know.

The Fling

updated: 1 December 2010

Rebelling against your parents is as American as apple pie, power-pop and Laurel Canyon – which leaves brothers Dustin and Graham Lovelis three for four in that equation. Rather than rebel against their dad, they followed in his footsteps – going so far as to take on the name of the group he disbanded to raise his family and embracing the melodic pop of Big Star and the laidback, sun-dappled harmonies of The Byrds.

Maritime

updated: 1 December 2010

Urgency isn’t the first thing you might expect from a new Maritime record. After all, these four guys have settled into domestic bliss in Milwaukee, with kids and wives and day jobs that don’t involve decibels and dirty rock clubs. But Human Hearts couldn’t live up to its title more: It’s blustery with passion and brimming with emotion. (The full word, not the shortened version.)

Fitz and the Tantrums

updated: 1 December 2010

In just over a year, soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums went from the living room to the main stage. The recipe for meteoric success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ.

Low Water

updated: 1 December 2010

Low Water, a Brooklyn-based foursome already of some acclaim, are savvy enough to understand the insufferable task of pouring through paragraphs of text explaining who met who where, the origins of band names, and the “ever-elusive” songwriting process of musicians you may not have heard of, so we’ll spare you the agony. Instead, we’re going to try hard here to give you just the facts, jack… Baretta style. So, please bear with us.

Eulogies

updated: 1 December 2010

the future would never be the same. my role as a friend, as a father, my love for my son, would never be the same. the innocence was shattered.

the divine comedy

updated: 7 September 2006
